Advantages and Disadvantages of Productive Reflection
Advantages
- Productive reflection has the ability to enhance learning during training initiatives when done correctly (see 'How to use it').
- It has the potential to improve performance and production in the workplace.
- It enhances employees' engagement by providing a sense of involvement and contribution to the decisions made at work.
- When done as instructed on this website (in a multifaceted approach), employees can learn off each other as well as through their own reflections. Any changes or improvements are a group effort and benefit the organisation as a whole.
- Productive reflection techniques can be implemented and incorporated into the workplace without being too disruptive to the employees' day to day work activities.
Disadvantages
- Finding the time for employees to stop work and reflect can take some time to become accustomed to. Having said that, the time required for an individual employee to reflect effectively should not be more than 15 minutes at a time.
- Finding the time for sharing between employees and to reflect as a group to generate discussions can also take some time to become accustomed to, however it can simply be incorporated into regular staff meetings.
